Ap. Prof. Dr. Mark Wossidlo

Group Leader

Mark obtained his PhD in 2011 at Saarland University in the lab of Jörn Walter, where he was investigating the mechanism of active DNA demethylation in early mammalian embryogenesis. He went on to study epigenetic reprogramming in pluripotent stem cells and early embryos during his postdoctoral studies in the laboratories of Renee Reijo-Pera, Vittorio Sebastiano, and Joanna Wysocka at Stanford University, USA. Mark then started his group leader position at the Medical University of Vienna, where he is now focusing his research on epigenetic reprogramming and the emergence of epimutations in early development. If not in his office, Mark loves to play with his kids, compete in (board) games, and enjoys adventures in nature.

Dr. Julia Arand

Group Leader

Julia obtained her PhD in 2012 at the University of Saarland in Jörn Walters lab diving deep into DNA Methylation maintenance and reprogramming. She then moved on to perform her postdoctoral studies in Julien Sage‘s lab at Stanford University, USA, to learn more about cell cycle control and the Rb pathway. Moving back to Europe, she joined the Medical University of Vienna and is now also back in the DNA Methylation field. If not in the lab, you can find Julia spending time with her kids, playing board games, or trying to play the mandoline.

Dr. Edidiong Akang

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Akang, Ph.D. in Anatomy (Reproductive Biology) from the University of Lagos, has a distinguished career focused on male reproductive health. His Postdoctoral Fellowship in Andrology at UKZN, South Africa, led to groundbreaking insights on impact of HIV antiretroviral therapy on the male gonad. As an Associate Research Scientist at Yale, he advanced HIV attachment and fusion inhibitor research, and later, as an Andrology Specialist at UPMC, USA, deepened his expertise in male fertility. With over a decade as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lagos, he inspired future scientists through courses in Human Embryology, Histology, Neuroanatomy, and Gross Anatomy. Currently, at the Medical University of Vienna, Dr. Akang examines HIV’s epigenetic impact on sperm, oocytes, and embryos. In his free time, he enjoys jogging, gym workouts, traveling, and family time.

Lia Watters McNelis, B.Sc

M.Sc. student

Lia earned her B.Sc. degree in Biological and Biomedical Science (Genetics) from the University of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. She is now pursuing her Master´s in Molecular Biology at the University of Vienna. In her Master`s project in the lab, she is interested in exploring Epigenome Editing to answer basic biological questions. Outside of the lab, Lia loves travelling, swimming and sudoku puzzles.
